The Detroit-Windsor Trade Corridor The Detroit-Windsor trade corridor is the busiest in the world with more than One Billion dollars a day. Why is it so busy and getting busier every day??? Deep sea port by way of the great lakes, shipping can dock right in Detroit, great infrastructure with rail lines and highways, close proximity to Chicago, and plans for the worlds largest airport. Geographically, Detroit will be important far into the future.
US car production Between GM, Ford, and Chrysler, they still control 60% of the market share of car sales in the US. Historically, annual new car sales are around 13 million. Since heading into the recession, new car sales dropped to less than 10 million. This is a huge drop due mainly to lack of financing. This lead to mass layoffs. With financing recovering, sales are climbing and 2009 sales were a little over 11 million. This lead to many people being hired back again. It will still take a few years to get back till the 13 million average. But the bottom line is that Detroit will be manufacturing cars far into the future and Detroit, Michigan is still very important to the region and the United States.
Mega Airport in the Making We are now into 5 years of a 25 year plan for the worlds largest airport. Designed to compete locally with Chicago as well as internationally with other large airports like Dubai. What does this mean? That trade is dependent on infrastructure and the airplane is the most important part of that equation. Followed by deep sea ports, rail infrastructure, and easy access to large highways. All of which Detroit has.
Alternative Energy Technology Fuel cell research, battery technology, and alternative car fuel research is centered around the Detroit region mostly because of the huge car industry. With the current federal administrations push for alternative energy, Detroit is in a position to benefit from government grants, support, and funding. Michigan already has the research centers dedicated to alternative energy and Detroit in particular has the manufacturing ability and trade resources that other cities just do not have.
Detroit has an amazing amount of high quality housing stock, more than any other City in America. The majority of this housing stock is of quality brick structures. Brick houses are expensive to build and most of the brick houses built in Detroit where built between the roaring 20's and the 50's when Detroit was the richest city in the world. The craftsmanship is remarkable second to none. If these houses were built new today, rebuild costs of these magnificent houses would exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars.
